What’s Your Kink? For Lovers of #BDSM and non-Vanilla Sex

Whether or not you consider yourself a kinky girl (or guy), if you read kink, you must have your favorite or favorites. Fess up. Some books do it for you and others may make your skin crawl. That’s cool. Different strokes for different folks and all.

If you’re a fan of this subgenre what elements do you look for in books? If you’re a writer, do you like to explore the lighter side of BDSM or the darker, more edgy side in your books? As a writer, I'd love to know what readers like and don't like.

Spanking, bondage, the power exchange between a Dom and his submissive, a female Domme and male sub, MM, FF, or a combination ménage, fireplay, needle or knife play, electrical shock, humiliation, voyeurism and a variety of role playing scenes. There are so many flavors in the BDSM world.

With a little imagination and a like-minded couple, sex (or erotic books) never has to be boring!

EMERALD DUNGEON Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2XWIKl_D7Y

Personally, I like reading a variety from light to dark and edgy, but I tend to write on the lighter side. Although, I think a few scenes may be considered a little dark. Even if I read the hardcore BDSM with one eye open, I’m fascinated and love this genre, and if the writing is good, intrigued by the connection between the characters.

Some authors prefer to stay out of the club scene and write a more personal story behind closed doors. That’s cool, I love those stories and I’ve written both club and private scenes. There’s a different dynamic in a club scene, a potential for conflict not found in a bedroom scene. Although, there is potential conflict galore in the bedroom too! I do like the voyeuristic edge in a club as I confess to being a bit of a voyeur.

Last year I attended Dr. Charley Ferrer’s BDSM Writer’s Workshop in NYC and visited Paddles, a BDSM club. I had my voyeuristic side gratified during these nights. Some scenes were easier to watch than others. A few like needle play in intimate areas I couldn’t watch at all. A scene between a Sadist and his lovely Masochist was compelling and I was riveted at first. I sat on a restraining bed watching (no I wasn’t restrained) as the scene developed, but after a while, I had to quietly walk out. It was much too intense for me. I did get a glimpse of what someone looks and acts like in subspace—a few people. A quick description would be a cross between a runner’s high and slightly drunk.

Research in books could never compare to attending these nights at the club and my own personal experience with a Domme. Yes, why pass up an opportunity like this? MaryAnn, a sweet Domme volunteered to demo a flogger on me. Bared from the waist up, I faced the St. Andrew’s Cross. She started out with light strokes and increased the intensity. Periodically, she stopped and checked in on me. I told her she could go harder. I wanted to feel the pain to better describe it in my books. I think I was able to go further than expected probably because I was in a loft area, looking down at all of the wonderful people, totally amazed and very distracted. I did say I’m a bit of a voyeur, maybe more than a bit. J My session finished with MaryAnn and I had my memory and research for my books, and the next day quite a few bruises.

The warm and wonderful people were so open and friendly and willing to share their thoughts and experiences and welcomed my questions. I greatly appreciate their kindness.

How to Research a BDSM Novel

For those of us who write erotic romance novels, especially those with BDSM themes, we occasionally get the snicker, a wink, a smart-ass comment and annoying questions, like: Do you research all those naughty scenes in your books? The quick answer is YES, but not the way you may think.

It took me a long time to decide to write a BDSM novel. I’ve read many over the years and was intrigued by the power dynamics and sensuality. I hesitated about writing my own books because I knew there was much more to these stories than dressing my characters in lots of leather, having them wield whips and chains and making up safe words. The depth of emotion and intensity in the relationships are very complicated and, I believed, difficult to portray well unless well researched. Although the stories are fiction, I wanted to portray the lifestyle as accurately as I could. Writing my first book did take a lot of research and courage, and I may have gotten a few details wrong. I’m still learning. I’ll be taking a three-day workshop on the topic in NYC soon, and look forward to spicing up my next BDSM novel with what I learn. More on that later.

Why? Why do couples/partners become involved in the BDSM lifestyle? There are probably many reasons. Some may enjoy the thrill of escaping into a sensual fantasy world. The excitement of exploring the forbidden and intense physical stimulation. And/or the joy of sharing deep intimacy and trust with another person. Please share your thoughts on this.

Here are a few suggestions for researching the BDSM Novel:

-Ask authors who are experts in the genre. I asked author Joey Hill lots of questions at  RT Convention one year. She gave me lots of suggestions and resources to check out.

-Read tons of fiction books in the genre.

-Read numerous non-fiction books. I’ll give a list of some at the end.

-Sign up on www.fetlife.com and perused the various groups and read posts to get a feel for the various kinks, lifestyles and lingo.

-Check out online stores for bondage furniture, hardware and bondage wear to dress you characters, furnish your dungeon and provide implements for your characters to play with. Go to fetish or sexy lingerie shops.

-Go to workshops. Yes, there are workshops on BDSM out there. Dr. Charley Ferrer, World Renowned Clinical Sexologist, TV/Radio Talk Show Host, Award Winning Author  is giving a 3-Day intensive workshop in New York City called BDSM for Writers. Attendees will visit a BDSM club and understand how to use BDSM psychology and power exchange between the characters in your stories, get the details of a scene right, add sensory details to liven every scene. Yes, I’ll be  attending this http://www.bdsmforwriters.com/Conferences.html

-Go to conferences. Many conferences are giving workshops on BDSM. Romanticon October 11th-14th http://ecromanticon.com/  . I’ll be doing a workshop with Joey Hill: BDSM Romance: Why Do We Love it. And also BDSM, Hurts So Good with Desiree Holt and Francesca Hawley.

-Talk to those in the lifestyle. If you’re open and honest and ask sincere questions you’ll usually get open and honest answers in return. Online sites like Fetlife is a good site for that. Post a question saying you’re a writer and would like to learn more about such and such. Some authors who write in the genre are also involved or connected in the BDSM lifestyle and they may be open to be a resource. Participating in the lifestyle is not a prerequisite for writing it well. You can write about an astronaut walking on the moon, a gladiator fighting in ancient Roman, or a caveman (a real one, not the hunky Ellora’s Cave one) discovering fire even if you’ve never actually experienced those lives.

Ready for a CONTEST? Author Island is helping me celebrate the release a HOT new anthology from Ellora's Cave, and I'm dying to give a copy away.

I just got back from Romanticon and while I was there, I got my hands on the new anthology: Dial B for Bondage. This anthology has 4 novellas from the 1-800-DOM-help series from Ellora’s Cave, including my novella EMERALD DUNGEON. The other authors in this book are Delilah Devlin, Francesca Hawley and Samantha Cayto.

Dana’s summer job as a musician in an Irish castle takes an adventurous turn after she witnesses a BDSM scene in the dungeon, and her submissive side awakens. Jack is a sexy Dominant who recognizes the sub smoldering beneath her demure exterior. His skillful commands take Dana beyond her darkest erotic fantasies.
Whips, restraints and increasing levels of pain heighten her passion, but complete surrender and ecstasy are out of her reach. Secrets and strange events around the castle only add to the couple’s troubles. Will a summer affair be enough to find what they both need? The appearance of a mysterious business card may help guide them. If Dana can accept Jack with complete trust and surrender, then ultimate pleasure and true love are possible.

HOT NEWS FOR EMERALD DUNGEON

Latest HOT news about EMERALD DUNGEON:

"Emerald Dungeon is a book you will absolutely love....for anyone who wishes to visit Ireland in their fantasies, and who likes some spice with their erotica." 5 Stars. ~Marissa D, Sizzling Hot Books

"EMERALD DUNGEON is a gem of a romance." ~Romance Junkies

"Emerald Dungeon is a great book. It is part of the 1-800-DOM collection, but is totally stand-alone. Go buy it now. The characters are empathetic, smart, capable, and sexy. I liked this couple from the beginning. The background is sensuous and the plot fascinating. The dialogue is well done, with enough of an Irish accent to remind you of the island. The sex is so hot it could start a peat fire. The paranormal aspect is well integrated into the story and adds to the basic plotline in a glorious manner. Congratulations to Ms Kullig for such a keeper." 5 Cups Anya, Coffee Time Romance

EXCERPT:

“Teach me. I want to understand what this is all about.”

He closed his eyes and took in a breath, then looked at her for a long moment. “It’s not for everyone.”

“That’s what I’d like to find out.”

Abruptly, he pushed away from her, stood and walked into the kitchen area. She stared at the fire for a moment, deciding whether or not to press him. Finally, she got to her feet and went into the kitchen. “I struck a nerve. Can you tell me why?”

He nodded. “A woman I was involved with was curious about the D/s lifestyle. It wasn’t for her and she left. It was hard on both of us.”

“Well, you know ahead of time this would be a brief arrangement. I’m only here until the end of summer. Haven’t you had a casual affair before?”

“A few at the clubs.”

“Then we both know what to expect.”

“Perhaps.” But he didn’t sound convinced. What was wrong with a summer romance and sexual exploration between two adults? She’d leave Ireland with fond memories of her hunky liaison, and he might remember her as his sexy American fling. They would remain friends after. Wouldn’t they?

Then a jolt of excitement and part fear struck her. Would he tie her up like Shannon? Part of her wanted to try that and part of her was terrified of the thought. “Are you going to take me to the dungeon?”

“No.”

Her insides wanted to scream at him in disappointment even though she didn’t know if she was ready for that. “Why not?”

He let out a long breath. “Because there are things we should discuss first. Limits for one. I wouldn’t want to do anything to make you feel uncomfortable working here.”

“Then we can take it step by step. I promise to let you know if something makes me feel uncomfortable.” To Dana that seemed reasonable.

Jack nodded and stepped closer. Cupping her chin with his hand, he gazed deeply into her eyes. Dana held her breath. “In the middle of a scene, you may not know what you can and can’t handle. I need to know you well enough to recognize a situation that’s become too intense for you, and anticipate your needs. I don’t want to hurt you.”

If ripping off her clothes would prove her desire for him, she’d do it. But throwing herself at him wasn’t going to convince him of her hunger for exploring the kinky side of herself. “I don’t know, Jack. I may not like a D/s lifestyle. I won’t know unless I get a chance to try it out. I’m not afraid to find out if this kink is my kink. If you were an asshole, you’d be dragging me to the dungeon and hanging me upside down right now.”

He smiled.

“I’m serious. You’re concerned about your partner’s needs. That’s good. How would we start?”

“Another term in the lifestyle is sub or slave. There is a difference, but I won’t go into that now,” he added. “We’ll begin by you calling me Master.”

April's Special Days and Oddities

What’s special about April? Most people have heard of April Fools’ Day (April 1st) but few know where it originated from. It’s recognized and celebrated around the world as a day for playing practical jokes or pranks. Some historians believe it originated in France, but it may be related to the Roman Festival of Hilaria held on March 25 and the Medieval Festival of Fools.

CONTEST ALERT AT THE END OF THIS POST!

Arbor Day is also celebrated in April. The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was created by Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902), a Nebraska journalist and politician. He felt Nebraska’s landscape and economy would improve with the wide-scale planting of trees. He proposed that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and he planted many orchards, shade trees and tree breaks on his own farm. In 1885 Arbor Day became a legal holiday in the state on April 22 to coincide with Morton’s birthday. In 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday of April as National Arbor Day.

Release Day for EMERALD DUNGEON

Exciting day today. The green shoes have arrived! Err, EMERALD DUNGEON was released today at Ellora's Cave And I do love the green shoes on the cover.

Yes, this story was inspired by a visit to a castle in Ireland back in September 2010. A writer's mind never stops searching for potential ideas for stories. I had a medieval dinner inside this 586 year old castle called Bunratty. I watched a show, listened to music, had more than my share of mead (honey wine) and listened to the haunting sound of a bagpiper outside. It was a blast. After talking to Desiree Holt about the 1-800-DOM-help author series at the last Romanticon, the naughty mind kicked in gear and I began to wonder what could go on in the dungeon of Bunratty castle...

As so many stories begin with a what if? So did Emerald Dungeon.

What if a woman muscian, a harpist, decides to take a break from her management job and do something she has always dreamed of: perform as a harpist in a small entertainment troupe. Just for the summer. It will be like a summer vacation. Then she'll return and get back to her boring, responsible job. But shortly after she arrives in Ireland, she discovers there's more going on at Rathmore Castle. She discovers a couple in the middle of a BDSM session in the dungeon and finds that her curiosity and submissive side are aroused. A sexy Dominant recognized the sub in her who is anxious to explore her erotic fantasies. There are many other secrets surrounding the castle and the couple has to face some difficult decisions. If they can accept each other with complete trust, and she can surrender to him as his sub, then ultimate pleasure and true love is possible.

New Cover & Book Trailer: Emerald Dungeon

Getting a new book cover is like opening Christmas presents. As always Ellora's Cave art department did a fabulous job on this cover. EMERALD DUNGEON is my new book that will be coming out soon and is part of the 1-800-DOM-help author themed series. This story takes place in a 500 year old Irish castle. It's a fun, sexy and mysterious story and of course there are a number of BDSM scenes in the castle's dungeon.

The mysterious 1-800-DOM-help business card appears when the relationship between the Jack and Dana gets out of hand. Other strange things are occuring in the story that add to Dana's turmoil: figures in black robes roaming around the castle, and Dana sees bizarre lights in the forest.

The business card is what links all the stories together:
The magic begins with the appearance of the business card. Sleek black print on a pristine white background—unassuming in its appearance. Those brave enough to call the number will begin a journey that will explore their greatest desires.

Once the call is made, the Operator goes to work. Somehow he knows just what every caller needs, always able to find the answer the caller seeks.

Callers may be directed to Unfettered, a new club in town, one nobody has heard of. It provides a safe haven for all who enter. Members are free to explore their every desire…even those they weren’t aware of. Little do they know Unfettered will disappear once those yearnings have eased.

Submissives who don’t know how to handle their Dominants. Masters looking for the perfect sub. People who need just a little push to admit vanilla isn’t their favorite flavor. The card finds them all.

Dana gets a summer job in Ireland as a harpist in a medieval dinner show. Her life is never the same after that. Here is a sneak peek snippet. Check out the awesome book trailer that fellow EC author and 1-800-DOM-help author Delphine Dryden created at the end.

EXCERPT-(unedited)

The castle loomed in front of her. A drive into town for groceries would wait. How could she pass up exploring the grounds of a five hundred year old monument? Closed or not, she had to take a closer look. She had all afternoon to shop and unpack. Walking toward it, she admired how the dark stone structure rose well above the trees and at each corner were tower-like turrets. The view from the top must be amazing.

After working in a security company for thirteen years, force of habit had her scanning the castle walls for security cameras or spot lights. No cameras, minimal lighting, no motion sensors. She hoped the park had a better system in place inside, considering the castle was supposed to have 15th and 16th century furnishings.

Why did the castle have to be closed today? Just her luck. She walked up the drawbridge and tried the door and sure enough it was locked. Crap. Maybe it wasn’t so easy to break into a castle.

Walking around the building, she ran her hand along the rough stone. Five hundred years old. What would it have been like to live here centuries ago? What was it going to be like to entertain here? She hadn’t practiced in over two weeks since she shipped her harp. Even though the audiences for the dinner shows would be small, her stomach knotted up as if she was about to perform at a huge symphony hall.

She was three-quarters around the building when she discovered a small alcove and a wooden service door at the end of the narrow walkway. Dana tried this door and it opened. She shook her head. Very poor security. She should mention this to Jack and make some recommendations while she was here.

A narrow curved stairway led up. The castle was huge and she preferred to know the lay out of the place since the first show would be in a couple days. One flight up opened onto a great hall. A few tapestries hung on the walls between giant windows and heavy dark chairs and one table took up one wall. They’d need more tables to seat guests. There must be another room.

Dana crossed the hall to another doorway that lead to a different stairway and was about to climb, when she saw a flickering glow from the darkness below. Fire? Could the castle be on fire? Wiring or the furnishings could be. She trotted down the circular stone stairs.

Darkness crept in around her except for the golden flickering light from the basement. Walking through another doorway, she thought she heard voices but she wasn’t sure. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up.

As she rounded a stone partition, the room brightened. Flames flickered within a half dozen wrought iron sconces, a fire burned in a small stone fireplace. The room smelled of sweet burning wood and damp stone. At the far wall two people hovered in shadows. Dana remained in her circle of darkness at the bottom of the stairs unable to take her eyes away from the sight.

The woman was naked, her wrists and ankles bound with straps that hung from the ceiling. Her arms and legs were spread wide in a V-shape.

NEW Sale! Emerald Dungeon

I love making blogging posts to announce a new sale. I just signed a contract with Ellora's Cave for a new book: Emerald Dungeon. It'll be my first story in the Taboo line and it's part of the 1-800-DOM-help author series. This story started out titled Pleasure Dungeon and was changed. I love the current title much better.

Emerald Dungeon fits the story well since it takes place in Ireland in a 500 year old castle. A woman from the States gets a summer job as a harpist in a medieval dinner show. But there's more going on at this castle after hours and Dana the heroine begins a sexual journey into the lifestyle of BDSM exploring her submissive side with a hunky Irishman who's a Dom. There's a light paranormal element running through the story too. This is part of the 1-800-DOM-help author series so a mysterious business card shows up and once Dana tries calling, the Operator offers assistance. Will she find what she needs to make a major life decision? And will she discover what's going on in the forest behind her cottage?

Check back for sneak peak excerpts and news of the release date soon.

Blurb: Dana Brennan’s summer job as a musician in an Irish castle takes an adventurous turn after she witnesses a BDSM scene in the dungeon. Aroused and confused by her own sexually submissive desires, she seeks out a mentor who’ll teach her the ways of pleasure and pain.

Jack Murray is a sexy Dominant who recognizes the sub smoldering beneath the demure exterior. Under his skillful commands, he takes Dana beyond her darkest erotic fantasies.

Through bondage and submission with whips, restraints and increasing levels of pain, Dana approaches intense heightened ecstasy, but complete surrender is out of her reach. She knows she’ll return to the states soon, and resists the love building between them. Secrets and strange events around the castle only add to their troubles. The appearance of a mysterious 1-800-DOM-help business card offers to guide them. If she can accept Jack with complete trust and surrender, then ultimate pleasure and true love is possible.

Del Dryden, http://www.delphinedryden.com/ ,an EC author and one of the 1-800-DOM-help authors is making up a fabulous book trailer for me. I can't wait to show you. Once I get the book cover she should have it finished.

A few of my books have had some BDSM elements. This is my first complete D/s (dominant/submissive) story. While the hero and heroine are exploring this alternative lifestyle, there's a deep developing romance and a HEA ending. Have you read many BDSM stories? What do you like, don't like? What give you the squik factor in these stories?
