Leader of the Pack, #amreading Francesca Hawley

Leader of the Pack

Welcome guest author Francesca Hawley. Thanks so much Francesca for coming to the Passion Sense blog to talk about your latest release at Ellora’s Cave, Leaderof the Pack, and for doing an interview. I love shapeshifters and book 1, Alpha vs. Alpha, was a big hit so I’m sure this one will be too.

Kathy,

Thanks so much for the invitation to visit your blog to share information about my upcoming release. I'm really excited to be here.

*What is your current (next) release and tell us a little about it.

My next release on December 21 is Leader of the Pack. This story is a sequel to Alpha vs. Alpha. Matchmaker Serena Goldwolf sets up her friend, packleader Yohana Whitewolf to find a Mate in order to placate her nervous pack. Serena matches Yohana with handsome surgeon Dr. Per Goldwolf who wants to make partner in his surgical practice. To do this, he needs to produce a fiancée to satisfy the criteria of the senior partner of his medical practice.

What is your writing day like?

I lost my day job back in October so my life has changed a lot recently. I used to go to work and come home and try to get some writing done. Right now, while I'm conducting my job search, I write daily. In early November, I managed to slam out almost 20K words. I was amazed that I could do it. Amazed and thrilled. It made me feel a real sense of accomplishment.

How did you get started writing novels?

I've been writing stories since I was in my teens. Unfortunately, back then I had trouble finishing anything. In the early 2000s, I found the Ellora's Cave web site and read voraciously and aspired to write like my favorite authors there. In 2005, my first novella was published and then I was thrilled to sell Protect and Defend to EC in 2007. It's been stop and start since then but I've continued to push forward with my writing.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Never, ever give up. Even though the process for getting published might seem long and become disheartening. Always keep trying because one day you will succeed. That publisher or agent you love will see your work and want it.

And also, writers have an alternative if they want to go in that direction, they can choose to self-publish. Just be sure to have someone, other than one of your close friends, critique the writing for you. You don't want to publish something that readers will remember in a negative way. If you self-publish, make it the best it can be and you'll gain a following.

Do you have a character in one of your books that continues to haunt you at night or surprised you when you wrote the book?

I'd say that character is Baron Eaduin Kempe, the hero of Seeking Truth. He started out as a villain in a completely different book. I intended him to be an evil sociopath with a beautiful face, but he kept whispering to me. Seducing me, really. He assured me that I mistook him. He was a different man than I tried to depict him as. It turned out, he was right. He was a hero, not a villain and I still adore him.

Are you an outgoing person?

Actually, I'm very shy. You wouldn't believe it if you met me at Romanticon because I dance and do all kinds of things there. But, when I first meet people I'm very quiet and listen a lot. It's only as I get to know them that I start to open up and let them know more about me.

Do you write a novel straight through? Or revise as you go? Plan a whole series in advance? Or does the series evolve?

I write chronologically. I have a lot of trouble skipping around so I don't do it. At times, I've left a scene out that needs to go in a particular place (usually a love scene) and then keep going and return to that scene but usually, I try to write with the flow. I do revise as I go. When I get started again in the morning, I usually go back and revise the previous chapter or two so I can get into the story and then the rest will flow more naturally when I hit blank space. I tend to be a pantser - writing by the seat of my pants - so I don't do a lot of plotting in advance. I often know when something might evolve into a series though and I'll keep that in mind as I'm writing.

What’s next?

I have a Valentine shapeshifter story on submission with my EC editor right now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she'll contract it. The story is set in Whitewolf, CO which is where Yohana Whitewolf is pack leader. It involves a rock band full of shapeshifters called The Pack and a local girl, Mandy Goldwolf, whose parents are members of the band. The new lead singer and guitar god, Joe Blackwolf is much younger than the other band members and suits Mandy to a tee. Family dynamics cause some bumps along the way to a Happy Valentine's Day.

Do your books have a particular theme or premise?

My books usually feature themes regarding family issues. Estrangements and reunions. Love and acceptance. But sometimes those problems aren't resolvable. Those are challenging for me to write. I've got one in mind where that is an issue for one of my characters and support comes from other places.

Anything unusual you had to do for research on this book?

I tried to figure out what a city manager/mayor of a small town would do. I knew that Yohana would be managing a budget for her small town, but I was surprised at the size of the budgets of Colorado skiing communities. For example, I found that in 2010 the Aspen budget (combined expenditures and revenues) was in the hundreds of millions. I wasn't expecting that for a town under 10,000 people. So I had a challenge trying to figure out what kind of budget my fictional resort town of Whitewolf, Colorado might have. I was surprised how interesting that kind of thing was too. I'm not much of a number cruncher, but it was fascinating to watch how politics played out in those communities.

Francesca Hawley, author bio

Hi. I’m Francesca Hawley and I’m a fat chick. A woman with dangerous curves just like my heroines.

I first began to read romance when I was in my teens. I loved the genre, but the heroines were all thin. Their thighs didn’t rub together…had never rubbed together…and frankly I had trouble relating to these ladies. The stories were great—full of emotion and well told, but the heroines weren’t like me and that was a major disappointment.  I kept wondering where were the fat heroines? I found some occasionally, but to have their Happily Ever After they usually had to lose weight and go from ugly duckling to swan.

Well, I wanted a fat heroine who loved herself—or at least learned to love herself—and a hot alpha hero who liked her jiggly bits just the way they were. Since I didn’t find many big girls to read about, I decided  to write about them myself. After all, I loved to write anyway and had been writing almost as long as I’d been reading, so Francesca Hawley – author of Romance with Dangerous Curves was born.

In a Francesca Hawley romance, my readers will find authentic, sensual, fat heroines who love and are loved by their intense, passionate, and seductive Alpha heroes. I hope you enjoy their dangerous curves just as much as their hunky heroes do.

Per looked up from his coffee to see Yohana striding confidently across the room. Two steps behind her was the young waiter, looking dazed and horny. What the fuck? Per had been on edge ever since she left the table, envisioning her in the bathroom stall with her legs spread and himself on his knees on the floor plowing into her. Now, here she was sashaying back to their table looking satisfied. He stood to hold out her chair. As Yohana stepped close to him, he was enveloped in the scent of her recent arousal…and orgasm. His bitch screwed someone else then walked back to the table as if nothing had happened. Fuck that! Per caught the worshipful gaze of the wet-behind-the-ears pup and growled.

The pup blinked and stammered, gulping in terror. “I’ll bring your check,” he squeaked.

“Like hell you will, you whelp. You just mounted my Mate. We’re going for a walk. Now.

The boy yipped, flying off for the kitchen at a run. Per was after him in a shot, ready to kill.

        “Per!”

He ignored Yohana’s cry of command, looking back once, rage filling his vision. “I’ll handle this.”

The boy weaved between tables before slamming headlong into someone exiting the kitchen with a tray full of pasta dinners. Per caught the boy before he hit the floor, lifting him up by the collar of his shirt. A firm female hand grasped his wrist, while her arm encircled his waist.

Yohana pressed against his back to whisper in his ear, “I masturbated in the bathroom. The pup was nowhere near me. Let him go…” She sighed as he turned to look into her eyes. “Please, Per.”

He took a deep breath and nodded. The scent of his Mate wasn’t on the boy, so he released the whelp, watching as the boy ran hell for leather through the kitchen doors. Per closed his eyes, mortified at his stupidity. He had never claimed a female this publicly in his entire life, not even when he was in Sweden before his sire threw him out of their pack.

Yohana eased away from him, turning to the man, who happened to be Stefano Blackwolf the restaurant manager and son of the owner, Roberto. “I’m sorry, Stef. This is my fault. I’ll pay for the meals. Please allow me to buy the diners whatever else they would like to apologize for their wait.”

Per shook his head. “No. My fault. I’ll pay for it.”

Yohana frowned at Per. “I will pay. It’s my responsibility.”

Per’s blue eyes blazed, then he paused. “We’ll split it. Fair?”

Yohana patted his arm. “Yes. That’s fair.”

Per blushed as Stefano lips twitched, fighting to control his amusement. Per looked into Yohana’s eyes then he started to chuckle, drawing giggles from her. She blushed, looking down at her toes. He reached over, lifting her chin with a fingertip barely brushing her lips with his.

“Dessert, Yohana? Would you like some cannoli?”

        “That sounds wonderful.”

“Two, Stefano?” Per inquired of the manager.

Stef nodded, directing the busboys to clean up the mess while he went to inform the waiting diners of the delay with their meals. Per set his hand at the small of her back, escorting her to their table. He seated her and reseated himself.

“I’m sorry for setting this mess in motion. I didn’t consider you might imagine me having sex with Marcello. He’s a baby.” Yohana took his hand, meeting his eyes.

Per clasped her hand before lifting it to his lips to kiss. He froze, taking a deep breath. She’d washed her hand, but he knew it had been inside her…recently. Per looked into her startled gray eyes, breathing deeply so she’d know he smelled her sex. He opened his mouth engulfing her thumb, sucking and licking it. In spite of the soap, her taste lingered faintly on her skin bringing his body rigidly to attention.

Yohana gasped, color rising in her cheeks as she licked her lips. He could see her pebbled nipples tight against the silk of her dress. This was no frigid bitch and he was in big, big trouble because his mind rejoiced to discover it. Per wanted to mount her now. He wanted to grab her, throw her face down on the table, rip off her panties, and sink into her to make her his while everyone in the room watched…then cheered. What scared him the most was the expression evident in her eyes. She wanted the same damn thing!

Matchmake, Matchmaker, Make Me a Match

I'm celebrating with my friend Francesca Hawley with the release of her new book Alpha vs Alpha this week at Ellora's Cave.

Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Me a Match…

How does a lonely shapeshifter find love? That was the “what if” question that helped me create the concept for my current release, Alpha vs. Alpha. I reasoned that it isn't as if your average shapeshifter could advertise on eHarmony or Match.com. After all, explaining “and oh by the way I can change into a wolf sometimes,” would not be great icebreaker material on a date with one of the typical subscribers.
So, I came up with the concept of an online dating service which is supplemented by an office staff that could also provide personalized service if someone was willing to pay the price to be personally matched. Now this idea for a matchmaker entered my head in 2004 when I originally wrote the story and long before Patti Stanger began her entertaining Millionaire Matchmaker’s program on Bravo TV in 2008. I'd like to think I was a bit ahead of the reality TV curve there.

The heroine of Alpha vs. Alpha is Serena Goldwolf is a bit abrasive and volatile but in her defense, this is only because she's on the verge of going into heat. A heat cycle she wasn’t expecting because it’s brought on by meeting her True Mate, Damien Blackwolf.

What’s a True Mate? It’s a shapeshifter’s destined mate—a life partner and lover from whom there is no escape because they are fated to be together. A True Mate is the very last thing Serena wants in her life. Her parents are True Mates, and her perception is that her mother gave up everything to support her father.

Her mother put off college and had a pup as soon as they met. Serena can’t remember ever hearing her parents argue. Her mother would smile and nod when her father made decisions regarding how the Goldwolf pack will be run. Serena can’t and won’t live that way, so meeting Damien Blackwolf is a nightmare. She doesn’t want to find herself saying “Yes, dear” like a Stepford bitch no matter what half-assed pronouncement comes from her True Mate’s mouth, but she fears that’s her destiny because her True Mate is an Alpha male. The conflict raging through her is, “do I have to give up me to be with you?” She fears the answer is yes, so she fights her attraction to Damien.

Damien is at the age where he wants to settle down. He has approached Predator-Match.com (Serena’s matchmaking service) to find a Chosen Mate, never expecting that he’d meet his True Mate. All he hoped for was a compatible female with whom he could share his life and have pups together. A female he could fall in love with and with whom he could share the rest of his life. Instead, the first female Predator-Match.com found for him was a scary stalker type female and he’s pissed. When Serena realizes that he’d been matched with a female she’d thrown out of the service, she’s pissed too because it means she has to apologize and she hates it. And she especially hates apologizing to Damien.

All it takes is one deep breath, and Damien is sold on Serena. She’s his True Mate and he wants her in his life now and for always. When she runs, he gives chase…because that’s what True Mates do. Is he able to convince her that he wants her just the way she is? Pick up Alpha vs. Alpha to find out.

BLURB:

Alpha female Serena Goldwolf has spent a lifetime vowing never to be a submissive mate to any Alpha male. But all it takes is one surprisingly sexual meeting with Damien Blackwolf, a dissatisfied client of her shapeshifter dating site Predator-Match.com, and she is down on all fours, wanting to be mounted by the hottest male on two legs—or four—whom she’s ever met.
Damien Blackwolf doesn’t understand why the voluptuous Serena won’t admit they’re True Mates. To convince her, he decides to bring out her baser desires by dragging her off to someplace private to get to know her…intimately. But how can he convince her of their destiny when she refuses to acknowledge their True Mate connection and runs away from him? Guess he’ll just have to hunt her down and persuade her.
In a passionate battle of wills, there most definitely can be two winners.
Publisher’s Note: Previously published elsewhere but has been revised and expanded for Ellora’s Cave.
EXCERPT:
Chapter One
“What the hell kind of outfit is this?”
Serena Goldwolf’s head shot up at the irate shout coming from the outer office of her shapeshifter matchmaking business, Predator-Match.com. She brushed her bangs off her forehead with a sigh. Damn it, couldn’t anyone in this office take care of stuff without her intervention?
The male voice continued to roar out there, and she knew her secretary wouldn’t be able to handle him because Kara was such an omega even omega males dominated her. Serena sighed again, saved her database update and headed out to confront the wolf male jerk. Serena took in the male outrage with a shake of her head. Asshole. He shook his head as if he’d heard her. Yeah right. She wished.
“I’m sorry, sir. Really.” Kara huddled in her chair, her head dipped and her eyes on her desktop. Submission in her posture and her voice.
“You people set me up with some stalker bitch! I want to talk to one of the owners, now.” A tall black-haired man with dark-brown eyes leaned on the desk, his large hands flat on the wood.
Serena took him in, her body responding immediately. Damn it. She didn’t need this shit, but she couldn’t take her eyes off him. He wore a very expensive, black Italian suit, Italian black leather loafers, a crisp white shirt and red tie. The ultimate in power wear for the busy executive. And he was so good-looking he resembled an escapee from Fashion Week. She shook her head to remind herself that he wasn’t all that…he was just a wolf like any other.
Heads hung out of office doors, watching the confrontation with enjoyment, yet no one came to Kara’s rescue. Probably glad to be out of firing range themselves…that’s what she got for hiring betas. The females all wanted him and the males would jump to follow his orders.
Female musk clogged the air. Especially from Lea Redcat, one of her business partners. Predator-Match.com was damn successful. To the outside world, their site looked like a zoo animal match service. To the shapeshifter community, it was a way to find a lover or a life partner. Since Lea was allowing this thing to escalate, it looked like Serena to the rescue. Again.
“I’m really sorry, sir. We do our best to match our clients up with the best fit for them.” Kara cringed lower behind her desk and wouldn’t meet the man’s eyes. Typical omega posture. The male frowned.
“Are you saying you think I deserve a psycho bitch as my Mate?” His quiet voice seemed to scare Kara more than his shouting had because she backed up. It wouldn’t be long before she crawled under her desk.
“No s-s-sir,” Kara stammered.
Damn that bastard. He was done scaring Kara. Unable to suppress her temper, Serena growled. His gaze flashed to her and she felt it all the way to her womb. Damn but he was hot. Life was just not fair.
She challenged him—head up, shoulders back—inspecting him from top to bottom and allowing her gaze to linger, as if she were checking for fleas. His shoulders were broad and filled his Italian suit to perfection. His broad chest narrowed to athletic hips, and she would bet money that his belly sported a six-pack, and not of the beer variety. He had the kind of face that artists wanted to sculpt and women wanted to sit on. His eyes were the piece de resistance—large, dark brown and thick-lashed beneath perfectly arched brows.
In short, he was a god—or a male model. This was the kind of male who never looked twice at Serena because she wasn’t tall and thin, or tiny and doll-like. She had yet to meet a male wolf who wanted a woman with curves, but this kind of wolf was the worst. These wolves wanted trophy bitches.
Who are you?” His voice cut the air like a knife.
She lifted her chin when the bastard stared her down. How dare he try to intimidate her? She was an alpha female, damn it!
“I’m Serena Goldwolf and one of the co-owners of Predator-Match.com. Who are you?” No way would she back down from this one. The man needed to be taken down a peg.
He scowled at her and his eyes narrowed at her temerity in confronting him. The bastard was an Alpha from the tips of his perfect black hair to the bottom of his highly polished Italian loafers.
“Damien Blackwolf. A fucking unhappy customer.”
He straightened to face off against her, obviously waiting for his pronouncement to have some effect. He said it as if she were supposed to curtsey to him. Not only was he an alpha, but a Blackwolf Alpha. An alpha was a dominant male, but an Alpha was the heir of a clan, or the leader of one. This male had or definitely would found his own clan group one day.
“What seems to be your problem?”
On the whole, Serena was not fond of Blackwolf males—they were too arrogant by half, and this one seemed to think he was God’s gift. She had to admit he was a beautiful specimen who made her wet just to look at him, but she wasn’t about to admit that to him.
He smiled the smile of the male who knew a female was reacting to him. Shit. Her scent must be broadcasting. He licked his perfect full lips. Males were not supposed to have lips like that. Double shit.
“Your much-acclaimed psychology matching service paired me with the psycho bitch from hell!”
“Well, considering your obnoxious attitude with my secretary, it would seem our ‘much-acclaimed psychological matching service’ did just dandy,” Serena countered with a smile.
He growled and took a step toward her. She tensed but stayed where she was. The worst thing to do when a predator challenged was cringe or run, and this man was definitely a predator. If the bastard thought she was that easily intimated, he was in for a rude awakening.
She raised her brow and crossed her arms over her chest. He paused, dumbfounded, looking as perplexed as a pup trying to figure out why he tripped over his tail. Damn it, that made him adorable. Serena shook her head in disgust at herself. Alpha males were not adorable. They were royal pains, emphasis on both royal and pain.
She might be an alpha female, but she was damned if she was going to take an Alpha male like him as her Mate. When she did date, she dated betas because they were easier to manage. Serena blinked. Why was she using the permanent possessive with this one? A Mate was a partner for life, and a mate was good for a tumble. This male didn’t come close to fulfilling her needs for either role.
“Miss Goldwolf…”
“Ms.”
“What?”
Ms. Goldwolf. I’m not some untried adolescent, Mr. Blackwolf, and I would appreciate if you would acknowledge it.”
Ms. Goldwolf…” His sarcastic voice was deep and made her nipples harden. She pretended it didn’t affect her, but she knew he realized it did. Why did he show up here today? She didn’t need the aggravation.
“Yes?”
He glared down at her. “This is a business, Ms. Goldwolf, and I am a very dissatisfied customer. I have friends who I’ve told about this company who could very easily withdraw their business at my request. I suggest you moderate your tone.”
That was it. Serena saw red. She stalked over to him and poked him in the chest with her finger while she scowled up into his black eyes.
“Listen to me, you arrogant wolf! You come in here, guns blazing, and abuse my secretary then threaten me. Pull your business if you want. Tell your friends to take a hike too. I don’t give a flying fuck! I will not be treated this way by you or anyone!”
Serena felt as if she were outside herself, and she watched herself in horror. She was never like this, even when she was fully in heat. Oh, she snarled and clawed at males, but she’d never attacked anyone before. She sure wanted to attack this one though. He smiled grimly, and only then did Serena realize his last speech had been a deliberate taunt. Damn it to hell. Damn him to hell…
He grabbed her waist and lifted her easily. He took two strides to the nearest wall, pushing her against it while wrapping her thighs around his hips. He pressed his erection against her wet pussy. She moaned and her head dropped back. She heard him snarl and realized she’d closed her eyes—when she opened them she saw triumph in his.
“Oh fuck.”

Bondage Party - Release of Dial B for Bondage

Just a few days away from Romanticon in Akron, Ohio and I'm thrilled to have a new book out --
Dial B for Bondage at Ellora's Cave. This book is an anthology with four hot novellas from the 1-800 DOM-help series. Not only that but look who's in the anthology with me!

Delilah Devlin, Samantha Cayto and Francesca Hawley!

Here are the blurbs for the novellas. I've read them all and they are awesome reads! I have to admit I read Delilah's story on the plane coming back from my trip and was getting pretty worked up. LOL

Begging For it
By Delilah Devlin

She needs punishment…before she deserves pleasure.

Tragedy scarred TJ Lipton. Now the only way she can find pleasure is when it’s delivered with a heavy-handed dose of S&M. But finding a lover who can give her what she needs proves an elusive quest—until she finds the sex club Unfettered and a Dom named Cross McNally.

Cross understands all too well what drives TJ. He takes command of her body to give her everything she needs—restraint, the stinging kiss of a flogger, the thrill of a three-way—a sexual adventure that pulls her beyond her painful past and has her begging for more of his tender brand of domination.
Controlling Interest
By Francesca Hawley

Mozelle “Mouse” Vincent inherits money, a club and her boss’ son as a business partner when society leader Regine Stuart dies. Torin Stuart knows what his late mother’s wishes were for his exclusive BDSM club, Erotically Bound, but he’s pissed that he’s forced to trust Mouse—especially when her inherently submissive nature arouses the sexual Dominant in him.

After baring all in a heated, intense scene, Mouse realizes they still have to work together, but now Tor challenges any business suggestion she makes. When she wants to offer education classes, Tor dares her to organize the class and participate—as a submissive.

To his chagrin, Mouse agrees, but he can’t stand the thought of any other Dom touching her. Suddenly there’s far more at stake than the controlling interest in their club…because love is the ultimate prize in their power exchange.
Mistress Mine
By Samantha Cayto

FBI agent and ex-military man Trey Boudreau likes to be in control and issue orders. But the bedroom is not a battlefield. His secret desire is to submit his body to a strong, older woman. He discovers a card that promises him the right one to bring him to his knees.
Juliette Coyne is a Domme determined to overcome a past experience that left her questioning her ability in the lifestyle. She is challenged by Trey, a strong, younger man in need of a good lesson or two. Old habits die hard, however, and the past continues to haunt them. Trey and Juliette grapple with each other and themselves for control, trust and a future together.

Emerald Dungeon
By Kathy Kulig

Dana’s summer job as a musician in an Irish castle takes an adventurous turn after she witnesses a BDSM scene in the dungeon, and her submissive side awakens. Jack is a sexy Dominant who recognizes the sub smoldering beneath her demure exterior. His skillful commands take Dana beyond her darkest erotic fantasies.

Something Wicked is Coming This Way

I’m so thrilled that my story The Tattoo Witch was selected to be in the anthology SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, Volume One. Also included in Volume One are USA Today Bestselling author and founder of Ellora’s Cave Jaid Black, and other amazingly HOT EC authors Laurann Dohner, Mel Teshco, Desiree Holt and Eliza Knight. When I heard the call for stories for this anthology, I knew I had to come up with a story, and fast. I’m a huge fan of Ray Bradbury and SWTWC is one of my favorite books. Of course, Bradbury took that line from Shakespeare, but I always think of Bradbury first.
With the deadline for this anthology series just weeks away, I sat on my porch with a glass of wine, a notebook and dh. Dh helped me brainstormed some ideas. I ran through some of my favorite Bradbury stories, searching for inspiration, and I remembered The Illustrated Man. A man covered in tattoos and tormented by them. Hmmm, tattoos are a popular thing now. SWTWC is about an evil carnival. How could I make the two sexy and add an interesting twist? What if a witch gave out magical tattoos? These tattoos could make you more desirable, virile, sexually adventurous, grant any wish pertaining to a sexual nature. BUT these tattoos are dark magic and each one came with a curse. With each additional tattoo, the person’s love life got hotter and hotter, but the curses got nastier. Then where would it all end?

I have to also thank my friend Terri Prizzi who is awesome at brainstorming. She gave me some fabulous ideas for the nasty curses. Thanks Terri!!

This is the premise for The Tattoo Witch. Release date might be fall 2011. I'll keep you posted.

Interview with Francesca Hawley

Today at the Passion Sense Blog we have erotic romance author Francesca Hawley talking about her latest release from Ellora's Cave called CONTROLLING INTEREST This book is one of the titles in the HOT new BDSM author series called 1-800-DOM-help. I just finished reading Controlling Interest and it was a great read! I loved the heat and emotion between Mouse and Tor and the sex scenes were unique and hot.
Thanks Francesca for visiting.

-Tell us a little about the book and where did you get the idea to write this story.

I was kicking back and watching The Devil Wears Prada one afternoon. As I watched Meryl Streep tear up the screen, I had a vision of Regine Stuart. Regine led me to her seemingly abused and overworked assistant Mouse and her headstrong but loving son, Tor. The story idea gelled quickly. It was the writing that was the headache.

- What’s the best and worst part of being a writer?

The best part is having an outlet for my creativity. I can sit down at a computer and craft a world where everything runs at my whim (unless one of my characters decides to take over). I also love having contact with my readers and discovering I’ve touched them in some way. It’s humbling and uplifting at the same time.

The worst part? Staring at a blank computer screen when the words won’t flow. I know I should be writing but nothing is working. I hate that with a purple passion because I hate writing crap.

- Are you seat of the pants writer or plotter?

I’m a bit of a hybrid – part pantser and part plotter. When I write, I can generally find the beginning and a few plot points in the middle and I usually know the end. I have to write from point to point and hope I don’t get lost in a blizzard of irrelevant words.

- Which actor screams SEXY to you?

Viggo Mortensen. He didn’t hit my radar screen at all until The Lord of the Rings but from the moment I saw him in Fellowship, I was hooked. It’s hard to miss the fact that he’s smokin’ hot. Not pretty, but ruggedly handsome. I’m also a sucker for a guy who looks good in chain mail, and Viggo certainly does. Plus he has a sexy speaking voice and he sings like a dream.

Aside from the pure eye candy aspect, I like the fact that he’s a Renaissance guy. He’s an artist, poet, and photographer as well as an actor and I especially admire his commitment to his acting craft. I’ve read stories about how he became so focused on learning to sword fight during the filming of The Lord of the Rings that he had a tooth knocked out during a fight scene, but kept working until the scene was finished. Now that’s dedication.

- A lot of people think that genre hopping isn’t a good idea. What do you think?

Well, since I genre hop madly, I think it’s a good idea. Grin.

But seriously, it may not be the best idea in the world for author branding. However, it’s wonderful for author creativity. Once of the worst things that I can imagine happening to a writer is for the creative juices to dry up of for an author to be “typecast”. When an author only writes one thing, it’s possible that she will begin to stagnate because she feels confined or because she won’t step out of the comfortable box she’s created for herself. And no matter how pretty, a prison is, it’s still a prison. Just as our characters have to break down their walls for a happy ending, we as writers must do the same by going outside our own comfort zone to keep things fresh.

One thing I really love about writing for Ellora’s Cave is that I’ve had the opportunity to write a paranormal/shapeshifter romance, a medieval romance, and a contemporary. I can go where the muse takes me. It makes us both happier.

- Are you an outgoing person?

It really depends on the situation. When I first meet people I’m very shy. I tend to sit back and observe before jumping into things. But once I get to know people, I’m a wild and crazy gal. And anyone that’s met me at Romanticon KNOWS how true that is. LOL

-Do you write a novel straight through? Or revise as you go? Plan a whole series in advance? Or does the series evolve?

I’m very chronological when I write. I need to start at the beginning and write to the end. However, I revise as I go too. After I’ve left off in my story, I will pick up again and go back into the previous chapter to “get into it” again. While I’m reading, I edit. Just little stuff, but it gets the juices flowing so that when I hit white space I can just keep rolling with the story.

I usually don’t plan a series. As I’m writing a secondary character will wander into a scene and play scene stealer. When that happens, I know that I’d better pay attention. This person is important. Usually the scene stealer is a potential hero for another story. I have to go back into my story and make sure the secondary character hasn’t managed to seduce me from my main hero. If that happens, I have to fix it. As I write the idea for a series will evolve.

- Which books were the most fun to write? The hardest to write?

Protect and Defend and Seeking Truth were the easiest to write and Whirlwind Affair and Controlling Interest were probably the most difficult. The reason, of course, is length. I’m better at writing longer. I think in novels much more than novellas. My brain wants to develop all kinds of subplots and secondary characters and when you write a novella, you don’t have the time or space to do that.

Protect and Defend and Seeking Truth were also fun for another reason…research. I’m a real research slut. I love it. I can get lost in it. When I was finishing Protect and Defend, I had the opportunity to attend a Citizen’s Police Academy. It was a blast to have the opportunity to shoot a gun and drive a police car. While writing Seeking Truth, I went diving into books about the reign of King Stephen. It was fascinating. Then I also had the opportunity to pick the brains of my friends in the Society of Creative Anachronism on the topic of martial arts. I learned a lot from the fighters and knights I interviewed.

- Have any of your characters ever ended up completely different than you’d intended?

Eaduin Kempe. He started out life as a psychopathic medieval villain but he kept whispering seductively in my ear that I had him all wrong. Eaduin does seduction really really well. When I finally started to listen to him I discovered he was right and I ended up with a much better story with him as my hero. He was incredibly compelling to me. A guy who’d been deeply abused by his father and older half sister, yet he remained capable of giving and receiving love from his family and ultimately Verite, the heroine I created for him. He was truly a joy.

- What’s next?

I’m torn in a million directions right now. I’m working on a follow up to Controlling Interest which will feature Master Drago, but it’s also tied to Whirlwind Affair because the heroine is the younger sister of Erika Larson Bergstrom who was the heroine in Whirlwind. I’m also working on a story where the hero is Erika’s younger brother Andy Larson is the hero. Those are at the top of pile right now, but I have more in the works. This will be an exciting year for my writing.

Apart from writing, I’ll be visiting a friend who lives in California during April. That should provide a lot of inspiration for my writing. And I’m planning to attend Romanticon 2011 in Akron, OH. Ah, cover models. How can I not have fun staring at all those lovely young men? Evil Grin…

CONTROLLING INTEREST:
Blurb: Mozelle “Mouse” Vincent inherits money, a club and her boss’ son as a business partner when society leader Regine Stuart dies.

Excerpt: “She did what?” Torin Stuart rose from his chair with a roar.

Mouse was entirely grateful that the lion’s roar was directed at his late mother’s attorney and not at her, but the attorney was unperturbed.

“Your mother left her controlling interest in your club Erotically Bound to Ms. Mozelle Vincent.”

“But Mother knew…”

“Please sit down and allow me to finish reading the will in a proper manner, Mr. Stuart.”

Tor ran his fingers through his bright ginger hair and glared at her briefly before sitting with a growl. Mouse kept her hands tightly around her purse. He’d been really kind in letting her stay in the townhouse his mother had set aside for her use, but with this news, he’d probably toss her out on her ass. Damn it. She thought she was done with being homeless.

“Ms. Vincent, shall I continue?” Mouse nodded. “Very well.” The lawyer cleared his throat. “I leave my controlling interest in the amount of fifty-one percent in the club Erotically Bound to Ms. Mozelle Vincent. In addition, I will her the townhouse and all furnishings thereof in which she has been living for the last five years. The estate will pay property taxes for two years, but then, and I quote ‘you’re on your own’. Do you understand, Ms. Vincent?”

Mouse’s jaw dropped. That townhouse was stunning. Huge and smack in the center of Washington D.C. with a multicar garage. It was located in the historic Capitol Hill district, just blocks from the Capitol building and Pennsylvania Avenue. The place was worth…millions.

“Ms. Vincent, do you understand the terms of the will regarding the townhome?”

“Yes, I own it and Regine’s estate will pay the first two years of property taxes then it’s my responsibility.”

“Precisely.”

“Is that all? Can we discuss my club now?”

The lawyer frowned at Torin over the top of his reading glasses, his bushy white brows extending over the frames. “I have not finished. Please remain silent until I do, sir.”

Tor waved his hand with a sigh and the lawyer nodded. Mouse wanted to laugh at the byplay between the two men, but she was too shocked. What had Regine been thinking?

She had to have had an ulterior motive for doing this, God knew, she always did. Regine Stuart was always three moves ahead of everyone else…a master strategist. That was how she’d managed to be one of D.C. society’s reigning queens. When Regine spoke, everyone listened…even the president.

“Ms. Vincent, please attend.”

Mouse looked up as the lawyer admonished her. “Sorry.” She shrugged.

“Finally, for—and again I quote—surviving six years in my employ as my downtrodden Jill-of-all-trades and for making my final years a pleasure instead of a burden, I will Mozelle Vincent twenty million dollars.”

Ice filled her body before unbearable heat melted her emotions. Her jaw dropped, but she was so utterly shocked she couldn’t move. Then she burst into uncontrollable tears. Throughout most of her life she’d hadn’t had a pot to piss in, but then six years ago she literally tripped over Regine Stuart and her world had completely turned on its head. The lawyer rose and approached her.

“My dear, are you quite all right?” He awkwardly patted her shoulder and she nodded, still trying to cover her abrupt emotional response.

She hated crying. She hated losing control of her emotions. She hid whatever she felt behind a façade of calm, which was something Regine had always valued in her. And it was something they had in common. Even if the world came crashing down around them, both she and Regine could remain calm to pick up the pieces and move forward.

Mouse glanced at Tor, worried that he’d think she was being overly dramatic or that she was getting money she didn’t deserve, but he seemed moved by her emotional display rather than scornful. When she could catch her breath, she cleared her throat.

“Don’t mind me, really. Go on with reading the will.”

“There isn’t too much more.” The lawyer returned to his desk. “To my household staff…”

Mouse stared at her perfectly manicured fingers as the lawyer finished. Those nails were a luxury she’d gotten used to with a steady paycheck and Regine’s insistence that she look polished at all times. God, if she had walked past the Capitol building five minutes earlier or five minutes later six years ago, she and Regine never would have met. Regine had given her a chance when no one else would. Sometimes miracles really did happen.

“This concludes the last will and testament of Regine Stuart.”

“Can we discuss my club now? Please…” Tor growled as he turned to her. “Mouse, how much do you want for it?”

The lawyer held up his hand as the remaining listeners filed out of the room, leaving Mouse alone with the lawyer and Tor.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Stuart. Your mother left explicit instructions. Mouse…rather Miss Mozelle is required to hold her interest in the club for a minimum of six months. Under the terms of the will, the two of you are required to work together during that time.”

Tor opened his mouth then closed it again. He stood and began to pace. Broad shoulders, narrow hips and the most amazing ass she’d ever seen. Add a stunning body to his ginger hair and bright blue eyes and he was a package of mischief that made better women than her melt and get silly.

Mouse looked down at her hands out of habit. Ever since she began to work for Regine, she’d quietly had the hots for Tor, but putting that attraction to the test was unthinkable. First, she was sure Regine wouldn’t have been keen on having her assistant flirt with her son. And second, and most important, Torin Stuart had been seen escorting tall, slender and decidedly beautiful super models around town—his lovers had most definitely not been chunky personal assistants with frizzy, flyaway, boring brown hair and dull brown eyes.

“Mouse… Mouse, did you hear me?”

She met Tor’s blue-eyed gaze and felt the blush crawl up her neck. Damn.

“What?”

He sighed and rolled his eyes. “You’ve had a tough six years working for Mother. Just relax for the next six months then I’ll offer you a great price for the interest in the club.”

The lawyer cleared his throat, causing Tor to whip around. “Damn it, Thompson. What the hell is it?”

“Your mother required you to work together to manage the club. If any of the terms of her bequest are violated, the shares will be sold…but not to you.”

“What?”

“If the two of you don’t work together, or if you make an offer for her shares before six months have passed, which she accepts, then the shares will be sold to anyone but you.”

“The shares belong to Mouse. She can sell to whomever she wants.”

“No, I’m afraid not. If she goes against the terms of the will, she loses everything your mother willed to her.”

God, she didn’t want to challenge Tor about this, but she wouldn’t go back to living on the streets. She just wouldn’t.

She cleared her throat. “I’m sorry, Tor. I have to abide by the will.”
