Under certain circumstances two consenting adults may appear to be illegal or at least if extremely objected by others, then a scandal can commence.

A few political sex scandals:

Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky- This extra-marital affair later led to impeachment.

Thad Viers- S.C. State representative withdrew as a candidate for US Congress after he was arrested on harassing a 28 y/o woman.

Herman Cain- Republican presidential candidate accused of sexual harassment by several women.

Cris Lee- (married). Sent a shirtless photo of himself to a woman via Craigslist and flirtatious emails.

David Petraeus- Director of CIA had an extra-marital affair.

DEA Columbian sex scandal - Michele Leonhart, administration chief for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), had to resign after a government investigation revealed a number of DEA agents had engaged in sexual encounters with Columbian prostitutes on the drug cartels tab.

In my erotic romantic suspense series FLC Case Files, a secret society in the White House, run by the first lady, who purposely organizes secret sex scandals, undercover missions and even blackmail to manipulate foreign or domestic policies and stop evil men in power.

After fifteen minutes of buzzing the nurse, Alana gave up and swung open the door. Jag stood there alone, blocking her way. “Yes, ma’am?”

Alana looked up at fierce blue eyes and a deep-set brow. Jag usually worked nights with one other guard. “Where’s your partner?” She glanced down the empty hallway. No patients or hospital personnel. Normally she heard carts rolling up and down the halls and voices of nurses, doctors and cleaning people at all hours of the night.

It was too quiet. Where was everyone? It was almost seven thirty and all the nurses should have returned from their breaks. The hackles rose on the back of her neck. After the car bomb and Zoe’s abduction, she’d become overly paranoid. Would she ever be able to live without looking over her shoulder? Now that they were letting her go, she hated to sit around. If it wasn’t for the stash of cash she had hidden in her apartment—and hoped was still there—she’d try to leave town tonight. She didn’t need to waste Julia’s time by waiting for the forty-eight hours. She’d made her decision.

She bit her lower lip and a rolling sensation swept the pit of her stomach. “I need to see my nurse. She’s not answering the buzzer.”

He frowned. “Are you in pain?” His tone changed. Softer. Was he concerned?

“No, I need a bath, and I want to remove the bandages.”

One side of his mouth quirked into a grin. “Can’t you take a bath by yourself?”

“I can, but I need supplies so I can change the dressings.” She touched the gauze on her left arm. “And I want a bath. My room only has a shower. They’ve let me use one of the empty rooms down the hall.” It was also closer to the back stairs. If they left her alone for a few minutes, she might have enough time to get away.

He frowned. “I’ll send her as soon as she gets back from her rounds.”

She stepped into the hall and he blocked her from going farther. “Honestly, I could ask someone at the desk myself. I just need a few things.”

“It’s against orders for you to leave your room.” He pressed his lips together. He wasn’t amused. “You work for the White House, Ms. MacKenna. You know what it means to follow orders.”

“I do.” She winced at that because not following orders was what had gotten her into trouble in the first place. Did he know? “But I have left my room when they’ve given me the luxury of a hot bath. Besides that, they’re letting me leave tomorrow. I don’t think I need a guard anymore.”

“I haven’t been given a change in orders,” he argued.

Alana huffed. “I used to be a nurse and I know how to care for wounds. I could get the supplies myself from their supply shelves.”

He shook his head. “It’s for your safety. They don’t want you to leave this room.”

She studied him for a minute. “You’re not like the other guards, the ones who work days. I don’t know what it is. Are you secret service?” Alana raised her chin, trying a different approach, but it did little to help her confidence. Without heels, she was five-foot-ten and still looked short compared to this guy. He was muscular, but lean, like a cross between a weightlifter and marathon runner.

“How am I different?” He raised one eyebrow, perhaps amused by her observation.

“I don’t know. The others are obvious secret service in their black suits and coiled earpieces. So cliché.”

He glanced down at his outfit, the same as the others, then pointed to the same earpiece. “What’s different?”

“You don’t belong in the suit. You don’t look comfortable. I imagine you in camouflage, combat boots and hoisting an enormously heavy automatic weapon like in one of those military thrillers.”

He smiled and let out a grunt of a laugh. The man could smile. “You have good observational skills. I used to be in the military. But from what I hear, you could work on your sound judgment.” He tapped a finger on the bandage on her arm.

“Funny,” she said. “And who told you about me? What did they tell you?”

His pleasant manner suddenly froze to the original stone-set, unemotional state. “I’ll ask for your nurse to come to your room. Wait inside.” He pointed to the center of the room as a signal for her to move so he could close the door.

Alana planted her feet in the doorway. She wanted out of this place so badly she could taste it. It was Friday night and Liam would probably be at Paradise Underground. She doubted they’d let her in with the clothes Julia had left her. They required proper attire. And it was a little late to go shopping for fetish wear. She didn’t have much cash on her either. “I’ll wait here. I’m bored, the walls are closing in. Why don’t you tell me what your real name is and where you’re from? Is Jag a nickname?” She glanced down the hall, looking for Beth, her nurse, or another nurse or aide. No one was in sight.

“Jagger Denison. I’m from North Carolina.” Dark amusement glimmered in his steel-blue eyes.

At the club, she could read men, knew if they were dominant or submissive, could tell if they were experienced or virgins to the lifestyle. She could also tell if they were lying. This guy she couldn’t read. No emotion. Was he this cold in bed too? “You prefer Jag?” She smiled.

He nodded. Power and authority radiated through him. His gaze swept her room, scanning for what? Hidden dangers? Then he returned his focus back to her.

She checked the time. Seven-thirty. It was going to be a long night. “I’ll start my bath. If you like, you’re welcome to watch.” She hoped she could embarrass him into giving her a few minutes alone. A few minutes were all she needed.

An eyebrow rose. “She won’t be long. You’re not her only patient.”

I bet I’m the only one with twenty-four-hour guards.

Writers Pursuit of Immortality

OUT! All of you! I’m trying to write here. Not only do our families and work obligations require writers to budget time, there are other influences that invade a writer’s space and influence career goals. What do writers want? Why do writers write? Those are typical questions writers have to address, and writers are sometimes asked. As an erotic romance writer, I’m often asked an additional one: Are all your book autobiographical? My answer to that one is usually snarky or professional depending on the situation or my mood.

I think most authors write because they have a passion for it. They’re the born-to-be-writers. They have stories inside their heads that have to come out on paper/computer. They carry around a notebook and stories pop into their heads all the time. Anything at any time can inspire them. Many have started writing at a young age or were voracious readers all their life.

A few decided-to-be-writers to publish, make money, become famous, impress family and friends, create documents or books for their business, or because they like it, etc. And they may or may not work hard at their craft. There is no right or wrong way, but it’s important for a writer to know what they WHAT and WHY. It’s best to make these decisions with all the influences (publishers, editors, agents, well-meaning friends, family, fans, the market, etc.) OUT of the room.

What writers want and what they think publishing professionals and or the market wants can completely mess up their career plans.

For many years, publishers and agents wanted clones of what was hot and selling now! If a writer submitted a book to an agent or editor that was outside that realm, or worse was a mashup (a combination of a few subgenres), they would reject it. Self-publishing aka Indie publishing is allowing authors the freedom to publish those books, but I’m still seeing the Return of the Clones among Self-published authors. How many 50 Shades of Grey clones are out there? How many Bear Shifter books are out there? Don’t get me wrong I like some of those clones. I love reading some BDSM romance with innocent submissives, and I love paranormal books with shapeshifters. I’ve written some myself. http://www.kathykulig.com/books.html

Kristine Kathryn Rusch in her book, The Write Attitude, which I highly recommend, said, “The books that make a difference, the books that have long lasting impact—hell, the books that often hit the top bestseller lists for the first time for their authors—aren’t clones of some other books.”

I admire Ms. Rusch on many levels, especially with her choice to write in a variety of genres. She’s also a talented author, blogger, editor and teacher. And she’s highly successful in all of these areas! For a while she worked at The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. Years ago, I got that magazine. I voraciously read all the stories. I loved them and was inspired. I’m a huge SciFi fan. I also tried writing my own stories and never had the nerve to submit them. I never thought they were good enough—they weren’t. Then I took classes in creative writing and online courses and the teachers encouraged me to write books, but I still didn’t think I had the talent. Instead, I wrote articles for magazines and newspapers for several more years. Finally, I joined a writers group and started writing fiction. And SOLD!

The sexy mash-up queen. I love a variety of books: erotica, erotic romance, hardcore SciFi, fantasy, thrillers, mystery, ghost stories, and paranormal. So I write in many of these genres and have combined some of these subgenres. I had one reviewer comment about my book Red Tape for example: “Red Tape can fit in many genre categories and still live up to each expectation.”

What I WANT is for readers to connect with my books, no matter what subgenre, because they (hopefully) recognize an identifiable voice in all the books. Not all readers will fall in love with every book, of course. Not everyone likes BDSM or paranormal or sexy romance. I love reading a variety of books and many readers do too.

What is your WHY? Truly understanding your why will help to direct your career path. Do you want to be a wealthy writer (Most authors would like that. We work hard. We deserve to be paid at lease the price of a cup of coffee for a book. Come on readers, please understand we can’t make all our books $.99 or free.) Then you have to focus on what you have to do to accomplish that. Stick to a rigorous writing schedule, put out good books regularly, study the market, become business savvy, a good promoter, constantly develop craft (even the bestselling authors continue to strive to be better writers), set goals and stick to them. No time? Not an excuse. Then your WHY isn’t strong enough. I’m working a full time day job and a part time evening job and I find (make) time to write. I don’t sleep much or watch much TV. I know people who have children to take care or aging parents, etc. and still make the time. It may only be an hour or two every day, but that time must be scheduled. How bad do you want it?

Chasing trends is a waste of time. My goal is to find a happy balance between writing what I love, trying to please my fans, but also being aware of the market. I greatly appreciate the fans who tell me what they like and don’t like. The feedback is helpful and always welcome.

I don’t know where I heard this, so please forgive me for not quoting the right person. “Sex is the best thing two people can do together, and writing is the best thing you can do alone.” And I write about sex, mostly two people falling in love while going through struggles and having lots of hot sex. It may be in a futuristic world, another planet, with shapeshifting immortals, vampires, or in a BDSM club, or a secret society with assassins. If you visit my worlds, I don’t think you’ll find any clones.

Have you ever watched a thriller/suspense movie late at night and had troubling sleeping? Or dreamt about it? Or if you’re a writer of these exciting genres, and you write or do research late into the night, does it keep you up at night? I love alpha-male military, CIA, Navy Seal, secret agent, Black Ops stories. It gets my heart thumping. But sometimes my brain won’t shut off at night.

I’m in the final revision stages for RED TAPE PROTECTOR, Book 2 in my FLC series. It’s a thriller romantic suspense (erotic) with a light BDSM element. The story is set around a White House secret society, a private ex-military training site, lots of hunky alpha males, sexy romance, a secret security team, abductions, scandals, terrorists and more. I write until 11 p.m. or midnight almost every night. Is there any wonder I’m not sleeping at night? I keep going over the scenes in my head and occasionally wake up with nightmares.

 

A writer friend (thanks Mitzi) said she uses a cool APP for her smart phone called Zen Meditation or Relax Oriental Melodies. They have tons of them. They have an APP for everything these days. This APP plays a variety of nature sounds like ocean waves, thunderstorms, whale sounds, a Tibetan bell, birds, chimes, waterfall, winter wind, rain on umbrella, even a fan or air conditioner. It also plays a variety of soft music like flute, harp, oriental, new age. And sounds called ‘green noise’, ‘pink noise’, ‘green garden’, ‘awakes’, etc. You can mix a few of the sounds to play together. So, I decided to give it a try. I don't have any affiliate links with this, by the way. Not making any money on this.

10 Sexy, Scandalous, or Strange Things I Learned While Writing Red Tape

Are you a fan of the TV shows Scandal or House of Cards? You might like my new book RED TAPE, an erotic romantic suspense/political thriller with some BDSM.

Even fiction requires a certain amount of research. RED TAPE required a variety of research. One Goodreads reader said this book was, “suspense with National Treasure (the movie) bits and BDSM elements.”  For this book I dug information on the Freemasons, Washington DC, CIA, White House, merchant marine, Coast Guard, and many other things.

1.     I learned there were 14 American presidents who had been Freemasons, including George Washington, Franklin Roosevelt and Gerald Ford.
2.     I  learned there’s a website that you can use to locate the position of any ship at any place in the world and what port it’s heading. (Except military ships for obvious reasons) http://www.aislive.com/ and https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ 
3.     I learned how Navy ships and aircraft carriers fill up with fuel in the middle of the ocean. I talked to a merchant marine who said he worked aboard a ship that could be called a floating gas station. 
4.       Even though I was once a dive master and once rescued a struggling diver, I had to research how to rescue someone at sea.
5.            The number of women spies throughout history might surprise you. I’ve posted early articles are on this topic. Part 1 and Part 2 
6.     I was surprised how many sex scandals—real ones—there have been in Washington DC and how the press will blow someone’s sex life out of proportion in the news to gain headlines, while thousands are dying in a war or a natural disaster.
7.       Conspiracy theorists are everywhere—pretty scary to think what people think and believe. They’re all over the internet. 
8.            I looked up floor plans of the White House and the West Wing to write this story. Now I wonder if by searching the internet for this info. if I’m on someone’s watch list for Homeland Security. I’ve been told that’s all Hollywood.

10.            I watched the TV shows West Wing, Scandal and House of Cards, so compared to those shows, RED TAPE isn’t that far out. I'm almost finished with Book 2 and those who've read Book 1 might be in for a surprise. I'm learning about remote viewing for book 3. That takes peeping toms to a whole new level. When no doors or locks can hide national secrets, what are the consequences?
