Lynn LaFleur’s Favorite Season for FALLING IN LOVE

Autumn is my favorite season of the year for several reasons:

The colors. All the reds and golds and oranges of the leaves turning colors are simply breathtaking. I live in North Texas, where only a few variety of trees actually change color in autumn. I’m surrounded by mountain cedars and live oaks, which stay green all year long. But those trees that do turn color are spectacular.

The cooler weather. Our summers are hot and humid. Most of us breathe a sigh of relief when the weather starts to turn cooler. Finally, we can walk outside without feeling as if we’re hit in the face with a wet washcloth!

Football. And no, those tight pants the players wear have nothing to do with why I love the sport. Okay, maybe a little.

Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas. (I know Christmas is technically a winter holiday, but don’t burst my bubble.) Those holidays mean fun for the kids, togetherness for family, lots of good food, and laughter. Who doesn’t love watching a child open a present on Christmas morning?

Autumn also means more time inside for reading. I love to curl up in my recliner with a cup of hot tea and an afghan thrown over my lap while I get lost in an author’s world.

Lindsay drew her bottom lip farther between her teeth when she saw Sam unlock the door to the storeroom. She glanced around the bar, searching for the other bartender. She didn’t see him, but she could hear what sounded like dishes being shifted and stacked in the kitchen.

She had no idea how long Sam would be in that storeroom. If she did something, it had to be now.

Don’t be a wimp, Lindsay. Go for it.

Lindsay sipped her Coke and took a deep breath. Grabbing her purse, she rose and strode to the storeroom.

She stepped into a room larger than she’d expected. Long and wide, shelves sat along all the walls and down the middle, holding boxes of liquor and glassware. She saw a door straight ahead of her that she assumed led to the kitchen, or perhaps opened for deliveries. She couldn’t see Sam, but she could hear bottles rattling.

Laying her purse on top of a case of bourbon, she pushed the door shut and flipped the deadbolt.

The rattling stopped. “Monte?” Sam called out.

Lindsay leaned back against the door, her hands behind her for support. “No, it isn’t Monte.”

Several seconds passed before he appeared at the end of the middle shelves.

Lindsay said nothing and neither did he. She watched his gaze slowly move over her from head to feet and back again. Her heart pounded as if she’d done an hour of hard exercise. Sweat formed on her palms while her mouth became dry. She waited for him to move closer, but he remained still.

The first move had to be hers.

Mentally shaking his head at the ridiculous thought, Kade continued to the table. A person didn’t fall in love at first sight, no matter what the romantics said. It took time to build a relationship…time he rarely had since he traveled so much.

“I bought a couple of the chocolate-filled croissants, too, since they looked so good.”

He liked how she smiled in delight. “You must know the way to woo a woman is through chocolate.”

“Or maybe lure her into submission.”

He bobbed his eyebrows in a playful leer, which made her laugh. “I doubt if you have any trouble getting women to do your every bidding.”

He sputtered out a laugh. “’Tis a nice thing for you to say, but I’m far from having women do my every biddin’.” He rubbed his chin while he thought back to his last date. It shocked him to realize he couldn’t remember when that happened.

The family business, while keeping his bank account healthy, did little to help him in the relationship department.

He sipped his coffee while watching Lisa unwrap her breakfast sandwich and take a bite. No long, dagger-like fingernails for her. Medium in length and painted a deep maroon, they almost matched the color of the sweater she wore with her black pants. Several silver chains in various lengths draped down the front of the sweater. Large, silver hoops decorated her earlobes.

With her oval face, high cheekbones, straight nose, and full lips, she had to be, without a doubt, one of the loveliest women he’d ever seen.

Neither Mike Russo nor Cody Latham had expected her to show up in their conference room.

Of course, they wouldn’t have, given the various laws she’d broken to be here.

Shana Gallagher’s pulse ticked up another notch at that and their good looks. Virile and commanding. They were deliciously hot and smart, having once worked in military intelligence.

Mike, the proverbially tall, dark and handsome hunk, had found his way into government via his MIT training. He’d left DC five years ago to start his own firm. Now thirty-three, he regarded Shana with momentary surprise then male interest as his attention raked over her.

Despite her best intentions, Shana’s skin tingled.

To his side was Cody. Equally impressive at thirty-four, he forgot to take a sip of his coffee. The Starbucks cup was inches from his mouth as he also took her in. Quietly and restrained.

Shana’s belly quivered at the heat in his gaze, so at odds with his military background. It showed in the set of his broad shoulders and modified buzz cut, his hair short on the sides with volume on top. Those dark blond locks complemented his golden skin and hazel eyes.

Mike’s were greenish-gray, an arresting color given his olive complexion and chestnut hair, a bit longish and casually styled. Several strands dangled over his forehead, begging a woman to ease them back.

Currents of warmth rippled through Shana, leaving her cruelly weak. She hadn’t expected to react like this. During her research on them, she’d seen hundreds of their photos, including those not meant for the public. Their days spent with women, outdoors at the beach or sailing, both men’s hard bodies stripped to their swim trunks and bared to the sun. Mike’s bold tattoo on his left bicep. The cruel scar on Cody’s right pec that enhanced his masculinity.

None of those pictures had done them justice.

“Mr. Russo, Mr. Lathan,” the office manager murmured, her somber hush appropriate for this high-priced firm in New York’s Financial District. Dressed in a severe gray suit, the matronly woman smelled funereal, of incense and carnations. She inclined her perfectly coiffed head to Shana. “Ms. Gallagher, your four o’clock.”

Before Mike or Cody could say “huh” or “who?” Shana stepped deeper into the yawning room. It was possibly two thousand square feet and decorated in a combination of rose, beige and brown, its bank of windows offering a spectacular view of the harbor. An NYPD boat and cruises packed with tourists cut through the water, leaving foamy trails. Sunlight winked off those swells and the glass buildings, giving the early September day a dreamy, golden haze.

The door clicked shut behind Shana, leaving her alone with the men.

Mike pushed to his feet, his six-three frame superbly clothed in an Italian suit that probably cost five grand. Its subtle navy tones and his pale blue shirt heightened the effect of his sapphire tie. Cody’s was gray-and-white striped, his shirt charcoal, his suit a pewter color. Surprisingly fashionable given his conservative background.

He stood. His height matched Mike’s. Both men were lean yet muscular.

Power and male privilege radiated from them. Everything Shana had always mistrusted and despised. She couldn’t quite manage those feelings now. She knew far too much about them. They were surprisingly good men, downright decent, which added to their seductive allure and had brought her here.

Shana crossed the room, forcing herself to walk casually as though she belonged. The slit in her pencil skirt allowed the black fabric to fall away from her leg, exposing a bit of her thigh. Mike and Cody’s attention dropped to her sheer stockings and spike heels.

Hard carnal interest flared on their faces.

A curious mixture of pleasure and caution rushed through Shana, draining her strength. She put her leather tote on the granite table, the smooth stone a soft rose color speckled with gray, black and brown.

The moment she slipped her hand under the tote’s flap, Mike said, “Hold it right there.”

He’d spoken quietly. However, his deep baritone filled the impressive space, demanding obedience.

Shana calmed herself as well as she could and lifted her face to his. At this hour, stubble shadowed his upper lip, chin and cheeks. His lashes were unspeakably long. His attention moved from the tote to her silk blouse, the color of black cherries. No one had to tell Shana that her nipples were hard and jutting against the fabric. Suddenly, Mike couldn’t seem to look anywhere else.

A wave of heat rushed to her neck, her arousal unruly.

Steamy HOT Steampunk in a dystopian erotic romance. Steamy because it's erotic romance, HOT because the story centers around two worlds preparing and fighting as a devastating solar storm approached. 

There are many types of Steampunk and I've taken my own sci-fi, futuristic twist on it. My stories do tend to have a mashup (mixture of subgenres). They may annoy you or may entertain you. I like variety. I love steampunk in all its forms. I see it as speculative fiction where elements of the Victorian or Wild Wild West era are merge with minimal technology. Steam engines, gears and gadgets, elaborate flying machines. A Jules Verne, H.G. Wells society, parallel universe if technology, culture and society took a slightly different turn in evolution. LOVE IT! Oh, the possibilities. Perhaps there are the Steampunk purists who will hate my book, because I didn't follow some ethical code in this fantasy world. But isn't that the point it's FANTASY. Who's fantasy? Well BURNED DEEP is my fantasy.

I first came up with the idea while standing in line for the Epcot ride Soarin. Along the walls were large murals of fantasy worlds and one struck me. It looked like another planet, rugged and rocky like the mid-west with a shear cliff and there were small and large flying ships.

I started taking notes. And dh dragged me along the line. The underground world in my book reminded me of the book by Hugh Howey - Wool. This book was written way before Hugh's book if anyone was wondering.

 

Titles are tough and many times I've changed titles to my books or my publisher had to change a title because it was either already used or very close to another book.

Sooo, what was the original title for BURNED DEEP??

I liked the title but it seemed too long so I changed it.

“Why haven’t you come by to visit?” Daphne asked Ethan as she pouted her glossy lips.

Ethan let out an impatient breath. Daphne didn’t wait for an answer. She strutted into the room while he cursed himself for acting like an ass with Celia. What the hell was wrong with him? He’d nearly ripped her clothes off. Had he lost his mind? He liked his women uncomplicated. An escapee from Threshold, with a fiancé, an over protective brother, and the daughter of a baron, didn’t add up to uncomplicated.

He cleared his throat. “I have work to do, Daphne. No time for visiting.” He glanced at her minimal outfit. It was meant for entertaining her gentlemen guests privately. The sheer, slinky chemise showed every curve, every outline of nipple. She stood tall on impossibly high spiked heels. The automaton was built to be a temptress, and that she was. Ethan couldn’t help but be a little stirred by her attributes.

Daphne sighed, lifting her large breasts. “If I wasn’t such a mess, I’d never see you.” The tip of her tongue wet her upper lip. “Want me to lie on the bed?”

“That won’t be necessary.” He ignored the pass. Daphne’s programming for pleasure was situational, not meant to be reasoning. Although at times he wondered.

“Do you want me to step out?” Celia asked.

“No,” Ethan replied.

At the same time, Daphne said, “Yes.”

“What problems are you having, besides the obvious?” Ethan asked as he opened the box and extracted a few hand tools.

Daphne sighed and tilted her head down attempting to look demure. “A couple of leaks.” She slipped her chemise over her head without a sign of embarrassment. The only thing left on was a strip of a garter belt, stockings and heels. She turned around slowly in front of him and shot Celia a smirk. “I think I need my rubies replaced.”

“Her what?” Celia asked, shocked.

“Rubies,” Daphne repeated slowly. “There are plenty from the mines. I’d like a necklace like Miss Bethany’s, please.”

Ethan chuckled. “Your rubies are internal and you don’t need them replaced. It’s what makes automatons so special,” Ethan explained to Celia, then turned to Daphne. “I doubt Miss Bethany would allow you to wear them on the outside.”

Daphne pouted.

“Sit down Daphne. This shouldn’t take long.”

Celia stood and walked over by the window and stared out.

“Where are the leaks?” Ethan asked.

“Mostly steam comes from my nipples. The men are always rough with my bubbies. Honey, do you have that problem?” she asked Celia.

Celia glanced at her and forced a smile, not answering.

“I suppose not,” Daphne said. “Your bubbies are a little small.”

Celia frowned.

“Daphne,” Ethan warned. “Hold still and stop talking.”

“Yes, Ethan.”

He took a wrench and with a slight twist flipped opened one nipple. Wires protruded and steam spewed out. Celia gasped.

“She’s not from around here is she, Ethan?” Daphne narrowed her eyes at Celia. “She’s from Threshold, isn’t she?”

Ethan ignored her question. “I see the problem. You’re doing all the maintenance like I showed you?”

“Yes,” she breathed in a sultry tone.

He stuck forceps inside and tightened a valve, then re-connected her nipple.

“Oh, that feels good,” she moaned, reaching for the zipper on his pants. “Let’s play, Ethan. I don’t mind if she watches, or participates. Maybe I can teach her something. I bet they don’t have sex in Threshold.”

Ethan laughed awkwardly. For a moment, he imagined the three of them, naked bodies entwined on the bed, straining arms and legs, hips thrusting…He gave himself a shake, pushing the thought out of his mind. “Daphne, I think they programmed you to think too much. Now, where else needs adjusting?”

“My cunny.” She said it with such a matter of fact tone that Celia burst out laughing. Ethan was somewhat relieved by Celia’s response. Although this was routine maintenance for an automaton, having Celia watch was intoxicating. His libido was on a runaway train.

Daphne looked annoyed. “Yes, my cunny.” She lowered her voice and moved closer to Ethan. “A little steam pours out, which is distracting and then I can’t have a climax.”

Ethan frowned. “Daphne, automatons don’t have orgasms.”

Celia giggled and held her hand over her mouth.

“I do too,” Daphne argued. “Now fix it. I need to please the clients for Miss Bethany.”

Ethan took out a handkerchief from his pants pocket and blotted the sweat forming at his brow, then stuffed it in his pocket again.  Pull it together. “Okay.” He retrieved another tool, and Daphne spread her legs. A little puff of steam did indeed slip out of her channel. He tried to be professional and not smile. The wrench slipped from his sweaty hand and fell to the floor. He picked it up. “I can fix this.”

He found the tiny latch low in her abdomen and flicked open the inch-wide control panel. With a small screwdriver he, ah, made the adjustment.

”Mmmm. That feels nice,” she crooned.

“Lift your hips a little.”

Daphne stretched out on the loveseat and started rocking her hips. “Oh, Ethan, that feels so good. Don’t stop.”

“Daphne, cut it out. Hold still.”

“I’ll try,” she panted. “Yes, yes. Oh, deeper.”

“Hang on, almost got it.”

“I’m almost there.”

“I just need to tighten this screw down.”

“Ah, yes,...screw...tighter...tighter. I’m so hot. I’m going to come, Ethan. Yes,” she screamed. “Fuck me, Ethan.”

Daphne bucked on the loveseat and groaned, her body shuddering. If she wasn’t having a real orgasm, she was doing a good job of faking it.

Ethan rolled his eyes to the ceiling, amused by her display but a bit puzzled too. Why did Daphne behave like this? Maybe she was defective. He snapped the panel shut and dropped the tools in her tool box. He dabbed his forehead with his handkerchief again. “All done.”

“Gina.”

Hell. Even now, she heard his voice, dancing on the breeze.

“Gina.”

Louder now. More substantive.

Her heart lurched. Her head swung around. She stared.

Oh shit.

This was not a fantasy or her imagination or even a wish. He was here.

She scrambled to her feet and brushed off her butt, forcing her knees to lock, even though they wobbled. “Jace— Um, Jason.”

He was tall. Much taller than he’d been. And broad. His shoulders were breathtaking. And his muscles—muscles the boy had not had, honed through years of working out for parts, no doubt—filled his tight black T-shirt.

She ripped her gaze away from the tantalizing bulges to the lines of his face. Gawd. Tantalizing there too. His lips—which she remembered, tasted still—full and lush. His dark eyes were fringed with sinful lashes. The scar on his right eyebrow, the dimples, the curve of his cheek.

It was difficult to breathe.

“I-I didn’t expect to see you here.”

He smiled and something in her gut quivered. “I didn’t expect to see you.” He took a step closer. And another. “You… look good.” His throat worked.

“You, ah, you too.” Good was not the word.

She’d drooled over the TV screen Sunday nights when Blood Curse came on—the few times she’d dared to watch. Jason as a tormented vampire was irresistible. But his screen persona was nothing to his presence here now. He was like a beautiful spider’s web, luring her closer for one more glance when she knew, if she came too close, she would be trapped, consumed.

Her instincts told her to run.

She resolved not to. She resolved to face him. And be…civil.

To that end, she smiled. It was a light, flippant smile. It cost her. “Aren’t you supposed to be having a parade or something?”

A shadow passed over his features, as though he didn’t care for her blasé air. “Or something.” He shoved his hands in his pockets.

“You really shouldn’t miss it.”

“Shouldn’t I?” He got that tone, the one he used to get when he was feeling rebellious and truculent. He’d never used it on her before.

“Eden will be devastated.”

“Oh, well, God forbid I disappoint Eden Ames.” He strolled around her, taking her in, though she turned with him because it seemed the prudent thing to do. One did not turn one’s back on a petulant panther.

“She dislikes being disappointed.”

This seemed to annoy him. The muscle in his cheek tightened and bunched. He leaned in and hissed, “Fuck Eden Ames. Fuck all of them.”

She didn’t know why she lurched back. His vehemence, perhaps, the heat of his breath, or the vitriol. But she lurched back and kept going, as he followed, until she backed into a tree.

He loomed over her, far too close. And Lord, yes. He was much taller. He smelled the same though, like musk and man and Jason. She’d missed his scent. She’d missed it so much she was tempted to close her eyes and just breathe it in, fill her lungs with him until she could hold no more.

But she couldn’t close her eyes. Her gaze was riveted to his.

Tension crackled and spit between them.

When he edged closer, she set a hand on his chest. To hold him back. Probably. His heart thudded beneath her palm.

He was harder than he used to be. Oh, physically, certainly, but in other ways as well. There was a coldness in his eyes she’d never seen before.

It frightened her. And thrilled her.

She flinched when he lifted a hand and cupped her cheek. His touch was warm, gentle. He didn’t say anything, just stared at her, which was unnerving. But when he spoke, his words were more unnerving still, though whispered as they were. “Dear God, Gina, how are you even prettier?”

“I—”

He didn’t let her answer. His mouth closed over hers in a heated rush. A dizzying hunger snarled through her as she tasted him on her tongue. Yes, her soul cried, yes! Yes!

He moved closer, pressing her against the tree, sealing their bodies and their mouths and ravishing her with an unleashed passion.
