We hate to admit
it, but the days are getting shorter and the evenings getting cooler. The last
official weekend of summer is coming up. If you live in the northern areas, it
won’t be long before you’ll be stuck inside and wishing for spring. I’m writing
this now in the evening and have my windows open in my office while listening
to crickets and frogs. I’m wearing shorts and a tank. I know in a few weeks
I’ll have a sweater or wrap on and the windows will be closed.
So what are you
planning to do this weekend? Here are a few suggestions:
1.
Backyard
barbecue.
Set up tables and eat outside. Not too original but how many nice days are left? And how many people will be inside watching TV or sports, playing on their computer? Set up lawn games too. Play Frisbee, horseshoes,
volleyball, quoites. Quoites? I never heard of them either until I moved to
Pennsylvania. It’s similar to horseshoes but you toss rubber rings onto a spike
attached to a slate board. Not that easy.
2.
Canoe or raft
trip.
The water is still warm so rent a canoe or float down river on an inner tube.
There are lots of places where you can rent them.
3.
Hiking trails. Whether you’re
an amateur or wilderness junkie, there’s a hike for you. I live near the
Appalachian Trail and there are a number of places I can do a day hike or a
hike for a couple hours. Google: “Hiking Trails” for your particular state for
locations and ideas. Here’s a good link with great information. http://wilderness.org/article/tips-great-hiking?gclid=CNe7gKLIkLICFYNM4AodkDUAxA
4.
Golfing. Dh is taking
his nephew on a golfing trip on Monday. We’ll have the barbecue after. Not a
golfer? Try miniature golf.
5.
Renaissance Faire. If you live
anywhere near Manheim, PA. Check out the Renaissance Faire. It goes from August
4-October 28. http://www.parenfaire.com/
6.
Outdoor Music
Festivals or Parade. Check
your area for music festivals, parades or concerts in the parks.
7.
Bike rides. Again I’m
talking about my neighborhood. We have a biking trail system called Rails to
Trails, where they’ve turned the old railroad track system into biking trails. http://www.railstotrails.org/index.html
What do they have in your area?
8.
Beach trip. One of my very
favorite places to be is the ocean. In Jersey-speak: the shore. Spend the
weekend or the day if you’re close.
9.
Winery. I love wine.
White is my fav. But I have never been to a winery. On my To do list is a trip
to Sonoma Valley or Napa Valley.
10.
Camping Trip. As a kid that’s
all we did for vacation is camp. We started out in tents then progressed to a
pop-up camper. I spent many summers on The Cape (Cape Cod) or the Jersey Shore.
Where did you go for vacation as a kid? Lots of great memories.Cape Cod National Seashore
